This past weekend, Behind The Steam had the privilege of running a panel, Steampunk Music: Undefined, at the Bay Area’s new Steampunk con, Clockwork Alchemy. The panel may have been sparsely attended but the panelists filled the room with laughter and profound(ish) thoughts on their own work, the growing world of Steampunk music, and the importance of researching band names carefully!
Kristin was absent due to water heater exploding issues, so Alyssa took the lead and attempted to combine the intrepid musicians into a Steampunk supergroup. They weren’t quite having it but managed to combine their bands’ musical powers to make Aural Alchemy rock the con.
A huge thank you to our panelists: Josh Pfeiffer and Martin Irigoyen of Vernian Process, Erica Unwoman Mulkey, Eric Schreek of Unextraordinary Gentlemen, and Mason Brown and Pinky Weitzman of Not Waving But Drowning. You can check out all their stuff at their band sites linked above or find them on Twitter.
Not Waving But Drowning is actually playing twice more in the Bay Area before heading back to the east coast. Alyssa cannot recommend their music highly enough and they are awesome live!! She’ll be there dancing her boots off!! [Cataclysmic Megashear Ranch in SF on Friday and Disco Volante in Oakland on Saturday]
And also, Alyssa would like to thank everyone that came out the the nighttime entertainment of Clockwork Alchemy and danced to her music (as djTeslaRose).
And now is the point in the blog where we plug a couple of really exciting upcoming things!!!! 🙂
First off is SteamStock!!! On October 7th, the Bay Area is going to be host to the first ever Steampunk music festival at the Craneway Pavilion with Abney Park headlining!!! But we can only make it happen with YOUR help. There is a SteamStock kickstarter going on right now and you can get super cool rewards such as being a guest host on a Behind The Steam artist interview!!!
Then we have the stunning Unwoman who is kickstarting her brand new album, “The Fires I Started”.
And lastly, but certainly not least, the lovely Jody Ellen has released a sneak peak of her very first solo album, “Skyscrapers and Helicopters”.
Holy smokes, it’s going to be a great year for Steampunk music!!!
As always you can follow @BehindTheSteam on Twitter for all the latest blog posts and podcasts!
Thanks for listening!!
